I felt like a celebrity as the day breezed by, with girls of all types and varieties scurrying over to hear my story.

“So, this Norman, he actually kissed you?” a petite girl named Tula asked. “What was that like?”

I scrunched my lips and winced. “Totally icky. Like a slug crawling over my face.”

Almost everyone laughed, while a few others shuddered sympathetically.

“And then Lance came and pulled him off you?” another asked.

I nodded, feeling giddy at the memory. “Something like that. He was my hero, I guess you can say.” Everyone agreed amiably.

“Soooo…does this mean you two might still have a future after all?” a third girl teased.

My smile dimmed slightly as I felt red bleed into my cheeks.

“Margaret!” several squealed, “don’t ask her that!”

I smiled gratefully as several of them huddled around me in something resembling a group hug. I didn’t understand it, but it felt wonderful. And I found myself giggling almost uncontrollably.

It was more of the same at lunch; Cheryl, Natalie, and several other girls listened attentively as I recounted my confrontation with Norman for maybe the twentieth time. But as I brought my story to a masterful close, the shapely shadow of a girl spread over the table. I recognized her immediately.

Rachael.

She looked only at me, her shiny blue eyes rolling like marbles as she swayed nervously like a metronome, her hands clutching her food tray to the point I feared it would shatter. The table fell deathly silent, eyes darting back and forth between us like twinkling lights as my gaze dripped down her long blonde hair, lovely, full lips, and onto a busty chest surely suffocated by the tight blouse she was wearing. I bit my lip.

“Hi Cass,” she said shyly, her snowy face now redder than an apple.

I kept looking her over. “Hi Rachael,” I finally murmured.

More silence, and then she blew back a long lock of hair that had fallen across her cheek. “Well, I just wanted to say hello. I guess I’ll see ya later, Cassie.”

I realized she was leaving, and practically screamed for her to come back. “No, wait, um, here, come sit with us.”

She gave a delighted smile as she took the spot right across from me, her teeth shining white and perfect in the sun.

Natalie cleared her throat and looked pleased. “Good. Now we’re a complete table again. The way it should be.” The other girls yammered in agreement as Rachael smiled at each of them before turning her attention back to me. And I instantly wanted to hug her.

But someone began speaking, and soon we were all gabbing again until the bell dispersed us to our classes. Rachael walked over as I gathered my things, and I jumped slightly as I felt her hand caress the small of my back.

“Be sure to check your locker by the end of school,” she whispered sweetly, her breath the scent of strawberries.

“Oh, okay,” I mumbled, looking at her from the corner of my eye.

She winked at me and then sashayed away, catching the eyes of several guys in the process.
